The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a great season last year going 11-6. The Bucs rely on their shutdown defense to win ballgames. Their banner year came in 2002 when they won 15 games. Unfortunately, they followed up that great year with two disappointing seasons. The Buccaneers are hoping 2006 will break that trend.
Quarterback
Brian Griese took off for Chicago, which leaves Chris Sims as the Buccaneers starter. Sims will be entering his fourth year in the NFL. This former Texas quarterback must step up and become a leader to guide this offense. His ability to deal with adversity will come into question this year. The quarterback position could be a soft spot for this Buccaneers offense.
Running backs
It's all about Cadillac Williams. If Williams can stay healthy, the Buccaneers rushing attack will be formidable. When Buccaneers need to switch things up, they can get the ball to their tank Mike Alstott. They also have Michael Pittman, who resigned this season, to give the ball too. On a scale of one to ten, the Buccaneers rushing attack is a nine.
Receivers
The receiving unit of the Buccaneers is questionable. They are led by a longtime veteran Joey Galloway. While he had a good season last year, he will need to stay healthy this season for chance to repeat that performance. After Galloway, there really isn't any receiver that can step into the limelight. Will Michael Clayton finally step up and be the receivers the Buccaneers had hoped? The receiving unit has work to do.
Defense and special teams
The defense of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is top-notch. One key addition for this defense is LB Jamie Winborn. He's a physical player that's also going to help the Buccaneers depth issues. The Buccaneers defensive line is one of the better lines in the NFL. If there is a soft spot on the Buccaneers defense, it would be the secondary. The secondary is still slightly above average, but there are health and other issues to be concerned with. Kicker Matt Bryant helped solidify the Buccaneers kicking game and punter Josh Bidwell is now a Pro Bowler.
2006 prediction
The 2006 Tampa Bay Buccaneers have their work cut out for them. Their schedule is filled with tough teams such as: Seattle, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Washington, Carolina twice, New York Giants, Cincinnati, Atlanta twice and Philadelphia. The Bucs certainly have the ability to win 8-11 games, but I don't think they will be able to win any more than that. If the offense sputters, Tampa Bay could be in for a long season.
